Romanian power struggle

A report from the days before the impeachment referendum against Traian Basescu, the power-struggle between the centre-left government of Prime Minister Viktor Ponta and the centre-right President is fierce.

While the government accused Basescu of having overstepped his presidential powers, he in turn accused the government of undermining democracy by attacking institutions such as the Constitutional Court and fostering a coup d’etat.

In the end the President narrowly survived the referendum, but tensions remain.
